FSC Certification and What You Need to Know

If you care about the environment and green businesses or certifications, you’ve probably heard of FSC certification. FSC is not only an international certification but also one of the most respected certifications in the world. But what exactly is this certification and how does it work? Let’s explore it in the following article.

Understanding FSC and FSC certification

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization established in 1993. This organization was created with the aim of establishing standards for forest management to promote the sustainable development of forests worldwide. To date, FSC has a presence in over 50 countries with approximately 850 members ranging from non-governmental organizations and scientific research centers to businesses.

As it is responsible for setting standards in forest management, this certification typically focuses primarily on forest managers or producers of forest products. This is a voluntary, non-mandatory standard designed to help businesses and organizations balance environmental protection and social benefits with economic responsibility for both producers and local communities.

Types of FSC certifications

Depending on the purpose, FSC also has specific assessment standards and separate FSC certifications. Currently, FSC has a total of three types of certifications, specifically:

FSC – Forest Management (FSC – FM)

This certification is typically granted to timber harvesting companies that have met ecological and economic standards. This means that the company must be environmentally friendly, follow sustainable production practices, and still bring economic benefits to society.

FSC – Chain of Custody (FSC – Coc)

In addition to certification for businesses, FSC also has certification for product chains – FSC – CoC. To achieve this certification, manufacturers must ensure safety and transparency throughout the entire process, from harvesting to consumer use. FSC – CoC is a way for consumers to verify that a manufacturer’s products are made from wood sourced from clearly identified forests and fully comply with FSC standards.

FSC – Controlled Wood (FSC – CW)

This certificate was created to recognize controlled wood or products made from this type of wood to distinguish it from the five types of wood prohibited under the Controlled Wood standard. The five prohibited wood types include: illegally harvested wood, wood harvested in violation of traditional or civil rights, wood from high conservation value forests under threat, wood from converted natural forests, and wood from genetically modified tree plantations.

What are the benefits of FSC certification?
Environment

FSC pursues strict standards and norms to protect forests. In the process, the organization also promotes sustainable policies aimed at minimizing the impact of participating businesses and organizations on the ecosystem, such as regulations on keeping water and air clean.

Economy

FSC certification is an internationally recognized certification widely accepted worldwide. Therefore, a business or organization holding this certification will receive more attention and trust, thereby enhancing the value of its products. It is estimated that an certified product is worth 20-30% more than a conventional product. In addition, because this certification emphasizes avoiding resource waste, complying with their standards will also help businesses and organizations save resources during production.

Branding

Many businesses and organizations around the world value FSC certification. Therefore, manufacturers and timber harvesters who obtain this certification can easily elevate their brand not only domestically but also in the international market.

Society

In addition, this certification demonstrates that a business or organization is responsible towards people and society. To obtain certification, one must comply with strict laws and standards related to legal, environmental, and human aspects.

Conclusion

FSC and FSC certification are proof of a business or organization’s commitment to sustainable development in terms of society, the environment, and the economy. If you are considering becoming a green business or are a consumer interested in learning about sustainable green products, don’t overlook this important certification.
